ECHC L1 vs Spalding

The first match after the festive break saw ECHC L1 up against tough opposition, facing Spalding, who they lost 11-0 to, earlier in the season.

Ely knew they would have to put in a solid performance just to keep the score line down. Spalding were clinical with their passing and scored in the first phase of play from push back.

Not to be too disheartened, Ely players remained positive and endeavoured to close in on the opposition to stop the attacking play. With this spirit, the ladies started to build good play and created many strong attaching plays, Flix Remmy and Sarah Sutton doing a great job in midfield.

The first Ely goal came from dynamic forward play from Jess Haw who found Jo Rayner to sweep in a clever goal. The second saw Pamela Clarke break through from midfield into the D and from a strong strike from the edge of the area.

The second half saw Ely defence line challenged, the continued waves of strong attacks and subsequent short corners awarded. Captain Fiona Bartley put in a sterling performance, with strong tackles along with fellow defenders Ali Woods, Rachel Carpenter and Emily James stopping two goals on the line.

The final score was 8-2, leaving Ely disappointed after some positive and encouraging team play. The ladies are still looking for that first elusive win in the season.
