A tough battle against the Watton Warriors!

The Match plan was set – WIN, simple, right? Not so much!
Before the match Ely faced a big issue and not the ones being sold on the street corners by Hobo’s; Watton were top of the league. This presented a huge risk to Ely; that Watton could indeed win. The outcome was dishearteningly a 7-0 loss to Ely Ladies 1st Team. But that is the only time I am going to mention that score line.
Watton were a force to be reckoned with, playing top quality, drilled and practiced hockey. A delight to watch from the sideline I’m sure – not so much when on the receiving end. Also a bit like watching Man City beat Norwich 7-0 which I understand also happened - except we didn't have Delia Smith on a tanoy to cheer us on. None the less and as Captain Ali Chapman commented post match “hockey for Ely Ladies 1st Team to aspire too by Christmas”
I’m not much of a one for noticing what goes on during a hockey match but what I do know is that Ely did not give up and defended hard. The aforementioned score line perhaps could have been a lot higher if not for some excellent defending and superb saves by Kat Bamber.
On a positive note, it didn't rain and no one was injured – I did notice that!
Lessons learned from the day – Baked potatoes I suspect, need to be cooked for at least 24 - 48 hours in the club house oven to be even near edible for hockey teas – suggest that in future they are cooked at home and kept warm in the oven – this helpful advice courtesy of everyone’s favourite barman Alan Mason.
Man of the match was Kat Bamber.
Ely’s next match sees them visit Cromer to play North Walsham.
