Following promotion into Division 2NW, Ely Ladies 1s faced their first game with a home game against City of Peterborough 3s. An early goal from Charlotte Nix placed Ely up 1-0 within the first few minutes. The remainder of the game remained goalless, with Ely continuing to perform to a great standard to keep it a clean sheet and finishing with a 1-0 win.
The Ladies 2s got a triumphant win against St Ives 3s with some incredible play. Jo Rayner scored their first goal which was then followed by a baseline strike into goal from Molly Shaw in the first half. Second half saw a fantastic back post slip into goal from Sam King, a strong short corner goal from Aisling Taylor and another brilliant finish from Jo Rayner making the final score 5-0.
With lots of new players in their squad Ely Ladies 3s first game was away against Cambs South L6’s. Some great hockey was played by both teams with lots of shots on goal. Ely’s goalkeeper Hannah Dewey made some superb saves but an unfortunate deflection from an Ely defender into goal put St Ives 1-0 up at half time. Ely didn’t give up though and a fantastic pass into the circle from Paige McClean resulted in Alisa Kent-RIchens scoring the equaliser. Ely finished with a well deserved 1-1 draw.
Ely Mens 1s had a strong win way against Wisbech Town 1s with Krishna Naidu scoring their first goal within the first 5 minutes. A goal scored by Reece Laffar was quickly followed by a goal from Wisbech but Reece scored again leaving Ely 3-1 up at half time. Wisbech came back out strongly scoring another goal but Ely countered with a hat trick goal from Reece. Wisbech weren’t going to give up though scoring again with a couple of minutes. Will King secured the 5-3 win scoring with 5 minutes left to play.
It was another defeat for Wisbech Town when Ely Mens 2 won their game against their second team at home 3-1.
Also at home Ely Mens 3s played Cambridge South 6s. Sam Evans scored after 15 minutes to take Ely 1-0 up at half time. Goals in the second half by Matt Samouel and Liam Goodson secured a 3-0 win.
And to finish the Mens winning streak, the newly formed Mens 4s team won 2-1 against St Neots 4s with goals scored by Quentin Mitchell and Simon Curry. Captained by Club Coach David Carford, the Mens 4s team is primarily a development team aimed at introducing junior players over the age of 13 into adult hockey. With a backbone of older experienced players, the team provides a supportive and encouraging environment in which the junior players can develop their skills and game play. And what a great way to start the season!
