Annual hockey tournament - one of the best ever!

Julia Gilbert31 May 2023 - 18:45

The sun shone down on this year's annual Ely City Hockey Tournament!

Ely City Hockey Club’s annual Hockey tournament on Saturday 20th & Sunday 21st May was one of the best ever, and the sun shone throughout!

Fourteen teams took part – 5 from Ely, 3 from Cambridge South Hockey Club and 1 each from Bury St Edmunds, Cambridge City, Newmarket, Winnington Park in Cheshire, Wisbech, and the Old Suttonians from Long Sutton & Spalding- and matches were held throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday on the Astro pitches at Ely Outdoor Sports Association and Ely College. Teams were mixed with at least 5 outfielders needing to be ladies – the goalie could be either male or female.

The majority of teams camped at Ely Outdoor Sports Association for the weekend and some fantastic costumes were seen at the ever popular Saturday night party in the Clubhouse, with this year’s tournament theme being ‘Under the Sea’. The inflatable lobster and shrimp even made an appearance on pitch on the Sunday with the first ever goal being scored by a lobster in one game!

Big congratulations to the winners of the tournament Shield this year - Winnington Park Hockey Club and to the Cambridge South’s C’Horses team who won the Plate!!

A huge thank you must go to Rhianne, Nat and Sophie for all their hard work and organisation to make the tournament happen and go so well! A big thank you too to everyone else who not only helped them, but who also helped make the weekend go so well, including all the umpires, score keepers, team captains, BBQ queens, cleaner upperers and EOSA, and to all the teams who were fantastic in clearing up all their rubbish before leaving! We couldn’t have done it without each and everyone of you!
