The Ladies 2nd’s second match of the season saw them travelling away to Bourne Deeping who last week had been on the end of a major defeat of 10-0 to Haverhill. Ely were expecting a tough match and were sure Bourne Deeping wouldn’t want a repeat of the week before.
Along the journey to Bourne Deeping, Beth and half of the team were nearly taken out by a mad bus driver who under no circumstances was going to slow down!! None the less we finally arrived at the Arthur Meadows School; well it was at least half a school!
With no subs and a couple of the girls carrying injuries the match started slow but Nat Jones soon found herself in a one on one situation with the Bourne Deeping Goalie and was able to calmly knock the ball past the her into the goal putting Ely 1-0 up. At half time Ely had a change around with Nat dropping into midfield and Helen pushing up front. Ely had to work hard in the second half as Bourne Deeping upped their game. After quite a bit of pressure Bourne were able to convert a long cross into the D into the back of the goal. Ely were not deterred by this and continued to battle on and work hard. The match ended with Ely being awarded a short corner and although so, so, sooooo close Ely just missed out on grasping a late winner ending the match at 1-1. A point well and truly deserved. Under other circumstances, perhaps with a sub or two (if only we had have had a twelfth player! Oh hang on – there was someone called “Not” wasn’t there Beth?) the overall feeling was that Ely could have clenched the win. But as the saying goes, “well ‘ave ‘em at home”!
Joint player of the match was Nat Jones and Kea Haw. Muppet of the match was Aimee Cooper.
