Bad day at the office!

A home match could only mean one thing; a pre match costa for the ladies 2’s. Something that is becoming a bit of a tradition! As we all met up in high hopes of getting our first win, even maybe a draw, we welcomed two new players to the team; Molly Shaw and Connie Anker.

However today wasn’t to be our day! As play started Ely found themselves 2 goals behind after only a few minutes. A lack of structure allowed Haverhill to attack freely putting the defence under early pressure.
Ely soon found their structure and played a much better rest of the first half. Some
excellent saves by keeper Emma Blickem helped to keep Ely in the game.
As the ball found it’s way up into Haverhill’s half, Molly Shaw ensured the ball stayed in play from the back line; as the ball was delivered into the D, a nice little flick on by Kirstie Rogers to Mo Hodson who flicked the ball up and past Haverhill’s keeper, 2-1; maybe Ely could salvage this match.
Half time came but not before Ely conceded again making it 3-1.

The second half saw Haverhill up their game and although Ely battled on they found it increasingly difficult to stop Haverhill breaking through. A few strikes and short corners later, so many so that the face masks started to feel like the new autumn 2017 fashion accessory “must have” for the Ely defence, and after what felt like an enteral barrage of attack, Ely found themselves on the end of a Haverhill goal fest!! At 9-1 to Haverhill and with only a few minutes left Ely won a short corner, the final whistle blew, the short was taken and Kirstie Rogers slammed the ball to the left of the keeper hitting the back board and giving Ely their 2nd goal. A late high to finish the game on but not enough to earn any points this time.

Overall Ely battled hard but as the score line suggests, there is much room for improvement.

As Ely Ladies 2’s remain bottom of their league with the possibility of relegation this season becoming a reality; Captain Gemma Neal is expecting a good turn out at training on Wednesday, so that the team can work towards their first win ..... or draw to slowly and hopefully start to climb out of the relegation danger zone!
