Ely Ladies 2s 0 - 2 Cambridge City Ladies 5s
A late 4:30 pm push-back presented no problem for the ladies 2s this week, who got off to a flying start. Energy levels and morale were high, with Ely dominating the first half of the match with lots of play in the opposition's 25. Excellent teamwork between the mid-fielders Kirstie, Connie and Charlotte led to some great attempts on goal from the forwards, but unfortunately the ball just seemed to be repelled by the net. A late break from City's forwards led to a goal just before half-time, making it 1-0.
After an optimistic and positive team talk, Ely returned to the pitch wishing for younger legs but ready to fight back. However the young City 5s team had clearly had some coaching during the turnaround, and some good team play and skills led to another sneaky goal early on: 2-0. As the night got colder the pitch got slippier, leading to some excellent acrobatics but unfortunately no goals. Ely continued to fight right until the end, comfortably holding off City from any more attempts on goal. The final scoreline of 2-0 really does not reflect the game.
Special shout-outs must go to Gemma, for distracting no. 9 during the previous game and making him avoid the side-line for the rest of his match; to Mo, for taking out new-recruit Kirsty before the game had even begun (nothing like a warm welcome), and to Kirstie and Mo for imagining a third conceded goal in the second half and confusing the rest of us.
