After a 6-0 loss last weekend, the Ely ladies 2s were determined and ambitious to take it back with this week's match against cambridge nomads 2s.
Being one player down due to illness and no sign of our goalkeeper 10 minutes before the match, they didn’t get off to the best start. After a very cold, wet and windy warm up, spirits were high thanks to the encouragement from dobbie and connie. Despite the torrential rain throughout the entire match and high speed winds, everyone was optimistic and buoyant they were going to take home the win.
When the whistle was blown, they got off to a good start with some smooth passes between Dobbie and Ciara and some very strong hits from Emily up pitch. With some fabulous play from Connie who, after almost squeezing a goal in, still managed to keep everyone's spirits high in the dreadful weather conditions. Nomads unfortunately got a short corner, just sneaking a goal in the end of the first half despite our defenders, Karen, Izzy and Abi and our goalie Polly’s best efforts to keep it out. Regardless, some great play in the first half and Ely knew they deserved the win.
Being 1-0 down and after a quick catch-up in half time, with some words of praise and encouragement from Karen and a quick ‘sticks in’, Ely were ready to bring it back. With some great runs from Izzy to Gemma and Millie up pitch working together, it was looking more hopeful. Ely managed to secure a short corner, Gemma's great positioning on the back post scoring Ely a well deserved goal early into the second half. From there, play kept getting better. With a few long corners being taken by Emily and some great runs up pitch from Molly and Millie. Also with a great press from the attackers and some fantastic pressure and tackles from Connie, managing to keep the ball moving in Ely’s half.
Another short corner was then given to nomads, with a great save from Polly and Abi hitting it up pitch to Ciara, who then hit it across to Millie on the right. With some great words of encouragement from her dad on the sidelines, scoring a goal with a fabulous strike from the edge of the D, leaving Ely 2-1 up. Now with tensions high, Dobbie immediately stole the ball from Nomads and passed it to Molly in the D, who had a few solid shots at goal that were unfortunately blocked by the goalkeeper - ‘A for effort’. With some more great defending from Izzy, Karen, Emily and Abi, the finishing whistle was blown.
With a great and well deserved win and lost of fabulous team work, spirits were high despite the awful playing conditions. With lots of very strong play suggesting more wins are to come.
