Ely Ladies 2s v Royston Ladies 2s

Arriving at a very wet and windy home pitch Ely were determined to make this a Halloween match they would not forget. Capitan Gemma Neal lead a very strong team talk from under the shelter of the clubhouse, making sure every member of the team was prepared for the battle ahead.
The match started strong with Ely making shots to the oppositions goal within the first 5 minutes. Ely kept strong with Charlotte and Emily sending the ball up into the top D. The attackers took every chance they had and eventually it paid off with Ciara Comley scoring 25 minutes into the first half. Ely were determined and kept going and minutes before half time Charlotte Dobson scored a lovely goal, which was unfortunately never to be as the goal was disallowed.
The rain stopped (sadly only for minutes) and a promising half time talk left Ely ready to keep their lead. Defenders Amber, Abi, Isobel and Karen played some lovely hockey, moving the ball round the back and enabling Ely to switch play, passing up to the attackers who continued put pressure on the Royston defence. An exciting finish to the match and with just two minutes left, Ely were awarded a short corner; a great strike from Emily James rebounded for a follow up strike just going wide of the post. The final score signifying a much needed and deserved win for the home side.
Halloween appeared to be Ely’s lucky day and the win saw Ely jump up a place in the league table. Player of the match was split between Abi Day for her defensive skills and Ciara Comley for her lovely goal. Next week would have seen Ely Ladies 2s visit St Ives, however as we enter Lockdown, “the sequel”, it is unlikely the match will go ahead.
