Ely Ladies 2s v St Ives Ladies 3s

On Saturday Ely travelled to St Ives to battle it out for 9th place; St Ives currently in 9th and Ely in 10th with only a goal difference separating the two teams. A win for Ely would see them jump above St Ives into 9th.

As the whistle went Ely immediately put pressure on St Ives who were unable to clear the ball from their 16-yard area for the first 12 minutes. Despite their lengthy dominance of the game, Ely were unable to breakdown the St Ives defence and capitalise on their chances. As the tides turned and St Ives countered, Ely’s defence matched that of St Ives and prevented the home team from taking the lead. Goal-less at half time, the 2nd half saw much of the same, with solid defending at each end and neither teams being able to convert the chances created.

Ely had some excellent play in midfield, linking with the forwards and player of the match, Charlotte Beck, making some dangerous runs down the right wing. Ely were able to hold the ball up and put further pressure on the St Ives defence however today wasn’t the day for goals and at full time both teams had to make do with just a point.

Overall Ely put on a solid and disciplined performance, working as a team and executing their pressing tactics with precision. St Ives attempted to break through and on the few occasions they did, Ely were able to close them down, stopping any chances they created.

Ely, who remain in 10th place, but are currently 7 points clear of 11th place, will take on Huntingdon next weekend at home.
