Newmarket Ladies 2s v Ely Ladies 2s

This weekend saw Ely Ladies 2s travel to Newmarket to face their 2nd XI team.

Newmarket started the first half strong and Ely soon knew they weren’t in for an easy ride today. Ely quickly found their footing and settled into the game forcing Newmarket to have to work harder if they looking for a win today.

Each side had the opportunities to take the lead in the first half, however, thanks to some solid defending by Ely, it wasn’t Newmarket, and despite creating some chances of their own, it also wasn’t Ely. Instead, the first half finished goalless with everything to play for in the 2nd half.

Ely came out stronger in the second half and after being awarded a short corner 10 minutes in, Amanda Baxter was able to pounce on the rebound and slam the ball in the Newmarket goal. Having taken the lead, Ely remained strong, however in response, Newmarket changed their formation and upped the pressure on Ely. With around 15 minutes to go Newmarket broke down the right, made a cross into the D and on this occasion, Ely was unable to clear, leading to Newmarket slipping the ball into Ely’s goal.

The match finished 1-1 with Ely taking just a point from today’s game. The draw sees Ely move down to 3rd in the table, as the Pelicans, who Ely face next weekend moved into top spot.
