An unlucky loss for Ely Ladies 2s

Today saw Ely Ladies 2s face Newmarket 2s. After a well fought battle between the two sides the last time they met, resulting in a 1-1 draw, the anticipation for today’s match was thrilling!

Ely started the game in reasonable form occupying the Newmarket D. However, after soaking up the early pressure from Ely, Newmarket began to find their shape, and with Ely seemingly a little lack lustre in their efforts to close Newmarket down, Newmarket were awarded a short corner. A strong straight strike from the short corner was enough to beat the Ely defence and keeper, as it flew into the left corner of the goal, making it 1-0 to Newmarket.

A stimulating half time team talk from keeper Kat Bamber and some side-line advice from spectator Amanda Baxter to run onto the ball and cut the Newmarket passes out, saw Ely Ladies return to the pitch a different team. For all but a couple of counter attacks, Ely had Newmarket pinned in their half of the pitch for the majority of the second half. Ely were first to the ball, much more aggressive and despite a near post miss from Abi Day, which had the keeper beat as she lay on the floor, but went only slightly wide, Ely were just unable to find the back of the goal.

With the final whistle blown, Ely were unlucky not to have gained a point from todays match.

Player of the match was jointly awarded to Ciaran Hornby, Mollie Chamberlain and Gemma Bridges.
