1 goal, 3 points!

Ely Ladies 2 v Haverhill 2

After doing their warm up in very windy conditions, Ely Ladies 2s started the match hopeful to beat their previous score of 1-1 against Haverhill.

Ely worked very well as a team, calling for the ball and cutting off Haverhill’s play by going for the ball every time it passed into opposing play. Their hard work payed off as a strike off a short corner saw Sarah scoring an excellent goal in the first half. This exhilaration spurred the team on to expertly switch the ball around the back and have some fantastic linked up play down the wings to drive towards the D, helped by the wind seemingly subsiding and the sun making an appearance.

In the second half after a rallying team talk, Ely really came together as a team and were able to control the game more, passing the ball well in attempts to take some more shots on goal. The defenders did brilliantly in taking the ball away from the opposing end after Kat made some great saves, and pushing it back up the pitch in order for the midfielders and forwards to get some great runs towards the goal; Kendle took an impressive shot from the top of the D that was unfortunately saved, and Sam just missed out on her shot on goal earlier in the game.

Nearing the end of the second half, Haverhill upped the pressure and Ely fought hard to retain their 1 goal advantage, seeing Nicky saving the ball on the goal line only 2 minutes from the end. This left Haverhill with no goals scored and Ely as the triumphant winners, gaining a position of 4th in the league tables with the least amount of conceded goals overall.

Nicky got player of the match for some great play, and muppet went jointly to Ali for subbing onto the pitch too soon and Nicky, for accidentally taking Zara out! Overall, there was great teamwork, and a strong fighting spirit that helped secure the win.
