The Final Match

Saturday 26 March 2022
Cambs South 4s v Ely Ladies 2s
2-1
On the final day of the season, the table saw Ely Ladies 2s sitting in fourth place, just one point ahead of fifth place, Newmarket. With fourth place hanging in the balance, a win and three points for the Ladies 2s and a loss for Newmarket would see Ely secure their position and finish in the top four.
Earlier in the morning, Newmarket had played third place Kettering, but at the time Ely travelled to, already crowned league champions, Cambs South, the mornings score was unknown.
A strong line up saw Ely slightly change their formation and as push back came Abi Day had an early chance with a near post reverse stick shot which narrowly missed the target.
It was clear that league champs, South were keen to finish their season with a win and with South dominating possession they were able to capitalise on a rebound and strike from the top of the D slotting the ball into the left corner. 1-0 to the home side.
Ely dug deep and despite South having the majority of possession, Ely countered and created some concern for Cambs South but were unable to find the equiliser before the half time whistle.
The second half saw Ely create more chances on goal. Supported by midfielders, Zara Gilbert, Sarah Sutton, Molly Shaw and Emily James, Abi Day was able to keep the ball in play from the baseline and take a shot, again seeing it go narrowly wide of the goal.
At the other end of the pitch a strike by Cambs South which deflected high into the air, saw defender Fran Flack have to duck out of the way, only for keeper Rhiannon Bush to make a superb save with her right hand.
Further incredible saves from keeper Rhiannon Bush kept the score line at 1-0 however South made a break down the wing allowing them to take a straight strike in the D and slot the ball into the goal making it 2-0 to the homes side.
Ely continued to catch South on the break and create their own chances. A break down the middle for midfielder Sarah Sutton finished with a strike from the top of the D which was stopped on the line by the foot of a South player. After some deliberation a penalty flick was awarded to Ely. Sarah Sutton stepped up, and not before making some “hard eye contact” with the keeper, pushed the ball past the keeper into the left corner; Ely were back in the game at 2-1.
Ely’s defence, the best in the league, continued to hold off South and Ely continued to dig deep however Ely just couldn’t find that second goal and the match finished 2-1 to the Champs.
Player of the match went to Rhiannon Bush for her sensational performance in goal.
As the scores rolled in, Ely discovered that the days results had not fallen in their favour and Newmarket had beat Kettering 3-1, moving them into the fourth and seeing Ely Ladies 2s finish in fifth spot.
None the less, for a newly formed team, who have been supported by a further 22 players from the club, this is fantastic achievement for the Ladies 2s and has built the concrete foundations of a confident team determined for promotion next season.
