Ely fielded arguably their strongest side to date in this, the sixth weekend of the the season and hopes were high that Ely could get their first points by overthrowing the visiting side from St. Ives.
The game started at a high tempo and Ely proved that they could create chances by breaking forward and coming close early on. There were several early chances for both sides but it was Ely that took the early lead after just five minutes when Chris Purllant buried the ball into the St.Ives goal. This was the first time this season that Ely had led a match but it didnt last long. A back stick from Will Charlton saw the visitors awarded with a penalty stroke, which was put just out of goalkeeper Stuart Parker's reach to level the scores.
Ely defended some spirited attacks with some great tackling from Jules Palmer, Charlie Kisby, Tom Grimshaw and Will Charlton and used this to build possesion, territory and control the game. It was then down to debutant and man of the match James Taylor to impress with a tight angled reverse stock shot which left the opposition keeper flailing to edge Ely in front once more.
The midfield of Nick Wells, Stuart Clarke and Fez Abbas linked the defensive and attacking lines well in a way that has not realy been witnessed this season. Keeper Stuart Parker whilst still called on to make a few crucial saves was certainly not as busy as he has been in previous weeks and the home side led at half time.
The second half continued much the same as it predecessor with Ely over running the visitors until Max Rains saw a yellow card. This spurred on the visitors who began to take back control and were rewarded with the equaliser soon after.
Ely were not going to settle for that and got the rub of the green when Dan Jolly's goal was awarded much to the bemusement of St.Ives restoring the lead once more.
Unfortunately that was the last good fortune the home side were to receive. Elys' keeper getting himself on the score sheet when a missed ball probed the circle only to deflect off Parker's foot into the goal. Five minutes after a poor drag flick also found its way over the line to seal Ely's fate once again.
This was a very encouraging performance and shows that the cohesion within the side is starting to produce results. Ely travel to fellow strugglers Upminster next Saturday knowing that nothing bit three points will do.
