Yet another Saturday, yet another loss. Ely travelled to league front runners Saffron Walden with a bare 11. Knowing that this was going to be a tough game Ely looked to build on the game they wanted to play and try it out against a good Walden team.
The attacks from Walden ebbed and oozed from all directions pretty much from the start. Short corner saves from Stu, Myles and notably Will kept the home side at bay from 25 minutes. Then a short corner was neatly finished to give Walden the first score. A dubious decision made it 2-0 (The video shows the ball made no contact inside the circle). An injury to Keith may have reduced Ely to 10, but they say no sense no feeling and he trooped on like a hero. A third was added before half time with a cracking reverse stick effort that left Ely to scratch their heads at the half time break.
The second half saw the advantage of extra legs on the bench as Ely tired quickly against a fluent Walden side that were aiming to keep possession more and expose Ely’s half backs. Then the inevitable happened. A fourth was scored. Luckily there was a scoreboard so that the umpires could keep count as it finished with an embarrassing 10-0 defeat for an already deflated Ely side.
With a break in the league Ely have the chance to work on some much needed drills before the league resumes on 14th December when they travel to Ipswich-East Suffolk.
