Ely commit suicide at home

Neil Dodsworth28 Oct 2013 - 20:16

... week six saw the 2s at home to St. Ives on a blustery Saturday filled with chances, chances, oh and more missed chances.

The game commenced Ely pressing hard from the start culminating with some successful breaks down the right by Marc and Warren. As usual, Marc “meep meep” Hunt sped past his defender but decided to carry into the fence. However, a nice little give and go between the two resulted in Warren going in clear on the goalie the giant St Ives keeper making a great sliding tackle.

Ely continued to dominate the game, and spent most of the first half in St. Ives end.  They showed some great promise passing amongst each other but on occasion not so much, training is this Wednesday. Tim Reynolds anchored the midfield and started off a play that saw some tic tac toe passing lead to a shot on goal that was marvellously headed away by one of the St. Ives vets. Penalty flick given and up stepped Warren to bury the first goal... Oh no, he missed... In fact the ball is probably still in the air. Apparently there was a report on Anglia Tonight about a strange sighting on the A10 around 4 pm this afternoon.

St. Ives made a few decent breaks and managed a few quick shots on goal. All casually steered aside from a man of the match performance by Ian Grange. Half time score was 0 - 0. A bit unfair score line as Ely had dominated, but as with recent weeks, just couldn't capitalise.

Ely began the second half just as they finished the first. Some good pressure up the front led to a few short corners, but again, nothing, did I mention training is Wednesday? Another great run down the right by Marc who this time drew a clinical foul from the St Ives keeper up stepped on Ely’s on loan Canadian striker. Although this shot was fired low and into the corner (note from Tim ... Canadian corners are nearer the middle of their rooms) , It was another save by the keeper. Keeper 2, Ely forwards 0.

The game settled a bit after this, and Ely and St. Ives conceded a number of short corners each to no avail. Special mention should be made to man of the match Ian Grange who pulled off a string of fantastic short corner saves from a very competent St Ives drag flicker.

However, with about 20 mins to go, St. Ives varied their routine, a deft slip left was slapped high by their forward and into the back of the net. A very contentious goal but nevertheless, 1 - 0 to St. Ives.

Ely seemed to wake up from this as they battled hard and didn't really come out of St. Ives end for the rest of the game.  A nice little interception from Chris Beaumont took him in on goal, but another lunging dive by the Giant kept Ely off the scoreboard.

To add insult to injury, a nice shot by Brownie, was turned away by the boot of Chris Beaumont.  D*ck of the Day secured... The whistle blew on the game and Ely fell to a record of 3 wins and 3 losses.

Shout out to Dan Inkley who played his first game for the team today, a great start with lots to build on.

Special mention to Neil Dodsworth who didn't play today as his niggling ankle injury marooned him on the sideline for the duration. If anyone hasn't heard about it, please email him at *****@gmail.com he would be devastated to know that someone hasn't heard the story.

Training is on Wednesday.

Thanks to Chris for his help with this match report and for making it so easy in the DOTD voting.
