Well I guess it had to happen sometime. I mean, there has to be a limit to how many Own Goals you can score and not get Dick Of The Day!
After a battling performance against March 1s the week before, the intrepid Ely 2s assembled on another glorious Spring Saturday afternoon to take on another top of the table team – Peterborough 4s. While waiting for the previous game to finish, it was brought to our attention that earlier results meant that Peterborough had been confirmed as promoted. Whether this meant that they would take their foot off the pedal remained to be seen.
Ely started well, absorbing pressure from an obviously well drilled Peterborough attack. However, despite the best efforts of the defence Peterborough struck first. Not letting their heads drop, Ely continued to push forward. This pressure paid off with a penalty corner, from which Warren Dennis reacted quickest to Tim Reynold’s saved shot to slot in the equaliser.
Buoyed by this, Ely continued to match Peterborough in all areas of the field. This continued right up until just before half time when yours truly managed to lose his marker and nip in front of the advancing Ian Grange to put the ball in his own net. This attacking prowess means I now top the 2014 Defenders Own Goal table.
Despite this setback, Ely went into the break feeling like they had a good chance of at least a draw. The second half remained a tight affair, but eventually the extra Peterborough subs started to tell. Peterborough scored a further two goals, with the final goal being the pick of the bunch. The Peterborough attacker picked up the ball in the centre of the pitch near the top of the D and appeared to accelerate at warp speed towards the corner, leaving several defender’s in his wake. He appeared to have gone to far when, to quote a North Norfolk Digital presenter, “Striker!”; the ball whistled past Grangey and into the net.
Despite the loss, the team was happy to put in another battling performance which should hopefully put us in good stead for the crunch trip to Wisbech.
