The day started badly. Sam Dunkley got injured playing for the first, and we all wish him a speedy recovery. Secondly our captain was injured on the morning whilst caring for his hamster, the sheer weight and power of it, caused an injury words cannot describe, off to intensive care he went.
So on this sunny morning, a junior vice captain Reynolds was uncharacteristically late (with good reason), and we rushed to Wisbech. Selection of positions on the journey was difficult, as nobody actually knew who was playing but we thought our favoured "honey bee" formation may suit.
On our arrival, we were pleased to see Brownie, who I was told was unavailable last night. Brownie should be commended for his efforts travelling for Stoke, and we thank his wife for letting him "out to play"! Chris Purlant was in goal, in place of absent Grangie in goal, who did at least ask me the score so time later, and confess he was a little tiddly. Farmer Palmer should also be thanked for giving up ideal farming weather. We had 12 players (yes 12!) without our captain, the sun was shining and we were set for our relegation battle from the premiership (or is it Div3NW). I may have digressed but the background is not set.
On the back of two previous good performance, Ely warmed up well, and we look ready. A rousing pre match speech by junior vice sergeant Reynolds, was ignored by all and off we set.
Ely maintained possession from the start, and threatened from the start. Shaun "alfie" Massey at left back had one of his best performances of the season, attacking the wing as if he was twenty years younger. Marc Hunt had a whale of a time being hacked down by the Wisbech skipper, who on the 3rd attempt got a chance to contemplate his axe skills from the side of the pitch at the umpires pleasure.
The first goal came from a short corner, which was followed up well by Warren and our on loan Canadian striker Chris. He did say he would score in the car on the way there, it took a goal to convince us. Wisbech levelled the scoring with a deflection from their skilful centre forward, leaving CP stranded, and Shaun Massey looking at his shoes. Rob Minns needs credit for marking the forward all game (apart from the goal he scored), and uncharacteristically, he didn't complain once, and only left his side once the whistle had gone.
From the back, I could hardly see who scored the other goals, as leaning on your stick, looking at the sky and discussing with CP how boring it is in defence. However Jules did send the keeper to ground with a beautiful miss hit (or shit hit) that went over the keeper. Chris B got his second from a well followed up rebound. Michael scored the goal of the game by actually putting it where he wanted, top left'ish. Brownie finished the rout by beating 13 of the Wisbech defenders, flooring the keeper, and roofing the ball into the top of the net. His triple somersault celebration, and the brass band on the side of the pitch said it all!
The second half was a pretty one sided affair and Ely kept possession very well, and moved the ball from side to side, stretching an already defeated Wisbeech team. Reynolds added a brief excitement to his almost perfect game by giving the centre forward the ball. Comments of I have never seen him run so fast were made but its wise to keep a little in the bank for such unforeseen circumstances.
so we live to fight another season in the premiership (I mean Div3NW), a tough season but if we continue to play like the last 3 games, we wont be demoted until the second half of the season!
The fun was not over yet. At the end of the game, my phone went ping, from captain Dodsworth from intensive care. "Dare I ask the score he said", not one for juvenile pranks, I said "we lost 5.1". Many texts to our entire team continued, and the joke was set. He was very magnanimous to us in his replies "you tried hard", "sorry i couldn't be there with you". The shock did cause a stir in intensive care, and the defibrillator was used a couple of times but he survived. When I told him the result around 8pm, he was less overjoyed than you might imagine, luckily the drips and tubes connected to him, stopped him from hitting me.
DOTD was a close run thing, and after a recount, it was confirmed captain Neil had just pipped it with 12 votes (remember we had a sub this week). Although as Neil was not actually there, as acting senior vice president , Reynolds took the job. However MOTM was also a close run thing, and it was also unanimous that Neil should received this (12 votes), as we weren't sure we would win with him playing, so successful management should always be rewarded (only joking Neil we all lovely you dearly). Anyway that's enough serious talk, St Neots next week, don't forgot to renew your life insurance :o)
Finally, Sam get well soon matey.
